Google Business Profile for Sydney businesses: the local SEO checklist
A practical checklist to rank in the Sydney map pack: categories, photos, reviews, posts, service areas and the mistakes that get profiles suspended.
For a local Sydney business, the three map results at the top of Google are worth more than the whole first page below them. They are driven almost entirely by your Google Business Profile. Here is the checklist we run for every client.
How the map pack decides who ranks
Google says local results are based on three things:
- Relevance: how well your profile matches what the person searched.
- Distance: how close you are to the searcher, or to the suburb they typed.
- Prominence: how well known and trusted you are, judged by reviews, links, mentions and your website.
You cannot change distance, so everything below is about relevance and prominence.
Setup
- Business name exactly as it appears on your signage and invoices. Nothing added.
- Primary category is the single biggest ranking factor. "Plumber", "Skin care clinic", "Family law attorney", not "Business service".
- Secondary categories for every real service line.
- Service areas by suburb if you travel, or a verified address if clients come to you. Never fake a location; suspensions are common and slow to reverse.
- Hours, phone and website exact and matching your website and every directory. Consistency is a trust signal.
- Verification is often done by video now. Have your signage, tools or premises and proof of business ready before you start.
Content
- Photos weekly. Real jobs, real staff, real premises. Profiles with regular photos get far more calls and direction requests.
- Posts weekly. Offers, projects, updates. Older posts drop out of view, so keep them coming.
- Services and products filled in with descriptions and prices where you can.
- Description written for people: what you do, where, and why you, in plain language with your main service and suburbs mentioned naturally.
- Attributes such as wheelchair access, online appointments or women led, where they are true.
If you are short on material, the same photos and short videos you shoot for social work here too. Our guide to content marketing for Sydney trades shows how to capture a month of content in one visit.
Reviews
Volume, recency and replies all matter. The businesses that win the map pack ask every customer, automatically, at the right moment, and reply to every review within a day. An automated review request after each job or appointment is the simplest way to make this happen without anyone remembering.
A few rules for doing it properly:
- Ask everyone. Filtering so only happy customers get the link breaches Google's policies, and fake or selectively gathered reviews can also mislead consumers under Australian Consumer Law.
- Ask at the peak moment. When the job is signed off or the client leaves the clinic happy, not three weeks later.
- Reply to every review. Thank people by name and mention the service. For negative reviews, respond calmly, take it offline and never share private details. Clinics must not disclose health information in replies.
- Never offer incentives. Discounts for reviews breach Google's policies.
Service area business or storefront?
If customers come to you, as with a clinic, law office or shop, show your address and make sure the pin sits on your actual front door. If you go to customers, as with most trades, hide your address and list the suburbs and regions you serve. You will rank most strongly near your verified base, so a Parramatta plumber will find it hard to rank in Manly from the map pack alone. That is where suburb pages on your website and Google Ads fill the gap.
Website signals
Your website should name the suburbs you serve, have a page for each main service, load fast on mobile and carry LocalBusiness structured data. That last one is invisible to visitors and very visible to Google. It is part of every website we build.
Track what the profile delivers
Your profile's performance view shows calls, website clicks, direction requests and the searches that found you. Add tracking parameters to your website link so visits from the profile show up separately in Analytics. Most importantly, make sure calls from the profile are answered. A map pack ranking that sends calls to voicemail is wasted; missed call text back catches the ones you cannot pick up.
Common mistakes
- Keyword stuffing the business name ("BizFlo Plumbing Sydney Emergency 24hr"). It gets profiles suspended.
- Buying reviews. Google detects them, and so do customers.
- Using a virtual office or PO box as your address. Google does not accept them and suspends the profile.
- Changing lots of details at once. Big edits to name, address and category together can trigger a review or suspension.
- Ignoring the profile after setup. It is a channel, not a listing.
If your profile gets suspended
Suspensions happen to genuine businesses too, often after an address change or a flurry of edits. Do not create a new profile to replace it, because that usually makes things worse. Instead:
- Fix whatever breaks the guidelines, such as extra keywords in the name or a virtual office address.
- Gather evidence: business registration showing your ABN, a utility bill or lease for the address, photos of signage, and branded vehicles or equipment.
- Submit a reinstatement request from within the profile and keep a record of every step.
- Keep ads and your website working hard in the meantime, as reinstatement can take weeks.
Fifteen minutes a week
Two photos, one post, reply to reviews. That routine beats most competitors in most Sydney suburbs.
Frequently asked questions
Is a Google Business Profile free?
Yes. Creating and managing a profile costs nothing. The investment is the time to keep it active, which is where most businesses fall behind.
How long does it take to rank in the map pack?
A well set up profile in a moderately competitive category often starts climbing within one to three months. Competitive categories in dense suburbs take longer and depend heavily on reviews.
How many reviews do I need?
There is no magic number. Look at the top three businesses for your main search and aim to beat their count and recency. A steady flow of new reviews every month matters more than a burst.
Can I rank in suburbs where I do not have an address?
Your service area helps, but proximity to your verified base still carries weight. For suburbs further away, use service pages on your website and paid search.
Can I have more than one profile?
Only if you have more than one genuine location with its own staff and signage. Separate profiles for each service or suburb from the same address break Google's guidelines and risk suspension of all of them.
