Google Business Profile for Sydney businesses: the local SEO checklist

A practical checklist to rank in the Sydney map pack: categories, photos, reviews, posts, service areas and the mistakes that get profiles suspended.

For a local Sydney business, the three map results at the top of Google are worth more than the whole first page below them. They are driven almost entirely by your Google Business Profile. Here is the checklist we run for every client.

Setup

  • Primary category is the single biggest ranking factor. "Plumber", "Skin care clinic", "Family law attorney", not "Business service".
  • Secondary categories for every real service line.
  • Service areas by suburb if you travel, or a verified address if clients come to you. Never fake a location; suspensions are common and slow to reverse.
  • Hours, phone and website exact and matching your website and every directory. Consistency is a trust signal.

Content

  • Photos weekly. Real jobs, real staff, real premises. Profiles with regular photos get far more calls and direction requests.
  • Posts weekly. Offers, projects, updates. They expire, so keep them coming.
  • Services and products filled in with descriptions and prices where you can.
  • Q and A. Seed it with the questions customers actually ask, and answer them.

Reviews

Volume, recency and replies all matter. The businesses that win the map pack ask every customer, automatically, at the right moment, and reply to every review within a day. An automated review request after each job or appointment is the simplest way to make this happen without anyone remembering.

Website signals

Your website should name the suburbs you serve, have a page for each main service, load fast on mobile and carry LocalBusiness structured data. That last one is invisible to visitors and very visible to Google. It is part of every website we build.

Common mistakes

  • Keyword stuffing the business name ("BizFlo Plumbing Sydney Emergency 24hr"). It gets profiles suspended.
  • Buying reviews. Google detects them, and so do customers.
  • Ignoring the profile after setup. It is a channel, not a listing.
Fifteen minutes a week

Two photos, one post, reply to reviews. That routine beats most competitors in most Sydney suburbs.
